Hogwarts and Higher Ed

The other night I hopped on to Twitter and saw this:

@ayjay: Surely someone has done the McSweeney’s piece about adjuncting at Hogwarts, yes?

It went uphill from there; a whole thread of conversation instigated by Alan Jacobs, Distinguished Professor of Literature at Baylor University.

If you like Harry Potter, have worked in higher education, and generally enjoy funny-ness, go check out the collected thread at Storify: “The Adjunctification of Hogwarts.”

Dame Maggie Smith as Professor Minerva McGonagall in Warner Bros. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

A couple of highlights:

@ayjay: I mean, who thinks they’ll replace Mcgonagall with a TT line when she *finally* retires? Not this guy.

@wynkenhimself: The fact that the Defense of the Dark Arts teacher only ever lasts one year? That’s not from death. That’s a term-limited contract!

@theandrewbriggs: Don’t get me started on the “Patronus or Perish” culture at that place

It gets better. Just go read it. You’ll thank me later.
